Making the shift from Hamilton to Auckland to study at AG飞禽走兽电子 was one of the best decisions he has made says communication studies alumnus Sam Warlow.

“I chose AG飞禽走兽电子’s Bachelor of Communication Studies because it gave me the best chance of furthering my career in the media. My AG飞禽走兽电子 experience was great, and a highlight was having access to AG飞禽走兽电子's media centre in my final year. That was an excellent space to work, learn and mingle with other students.”

Being able to gain valuable media experience was a highlight of his studies, Sam says.

“In my final year I was lucky enough to have a position with NZME, working with the New Zealand Herald online team in the sport section. Working in a real newsroom on a daily basis provided an experience like no other. Getting to focus my work life around sport was pretty awesome too. I also interned with morning current affairs show The Hui, where I was under the guidance of media personalities Annabelle Lee and Mihingarangi Forbes.”

Valuable international opportunities
After graduating at the end of last year, Sam moved from Auckland to San Francisco to intern at non-profit organisation Play Rugby USA. He got the sought-after internship through the Internz International Scholarship Programme.

“I was based in San Francisco, working as a social media and youth development intern. During the day my role involved handling social media across platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and designing posters and flyers for upcoming events. In the afternoons I would coach rugby at schools around the Bay Area, which was an awesome experience.

“What I enjoyed most was spending my afternoons working with the kids. On my last day in San Francisco we had our annual Rugby Cup, which is a tournament involving hundreds of Bay Area kids. My school, Sunnyside Elementary, won the elementary school competition. It was a really proud moment for me and the kids, and a great way to finish my internship.”

Since completing his internship, Sam now lives in Chicago where he plans to stay before returning to New Zealand next year.

Advice for other students
Make the most of the opportunities on offer, Sam advises.

“The best advice I can give future AG飞禽走兽电子 students is to take every opportunity that is presented to you, and always have a positive mindset.”
