IT Recruitment Consultant, Alexander James
Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Employment Relations

She has always been passionate about people, says Tanique Francis who studied human resource management and employment relations, and now works for recruitment agency Alexander James.

“I wanted to step into a career that is centred around supporting people in the workplace. At Alexander James, I’m responsible for managing candidate and client relationships, matching the right candidates to aligned job opportunities and meeting client requirements.

“I enjoy that no two days are the same because I’m meeting new people daily. Because I recruit for roles in IT, which is such a rapidly evolving industry, I also get to learn something new every day. Even though it can be challenging, I enjoy the end result, which is helping candidates find a new job and helping clients find the right fit for them.”

Opportunities outside the classroom
Tanique, who graduated from AG飞禽走兽电子 in 2022, says participating in the many extracurricular activities was a highlight of her time at university.

“One highlight for me was becoming a student ambassador as I stepped out of my comfort zone and got to meet people I would likely not have met otherwise as they were studying different programmes. I also got to have so much of fun, helping new students integrate into the university in their first few weeks of uni.

“I also really enjoyed signing up for and achieving the AG飞禽走兽电子 Edge Award. I got to learn about how to best present myself when I was looking for work, and gained tips on CV writing, interviews and LinkedIn profiles. This helped me in my current role as I now provide these same tips to candidates I work with. I also had to do volunteering hours to complete the award, which resulted in me looking after puppies. I now own one, which is a bonus!”

Taking part in the Shadow a Leader programme, where students spend a day with an industry leader in their chosen profession, was another highpoint for her.

“I wanted to do Shadow a Leader as I wanted to gain exposure to what the workplace would look like. I shadowed Teina Teariki Mana, who is the community engagement manager at Vector, and had the most amazing day learning about what Vector does, and the role Teina plays in the organisation. I felt extremely inspired to see how Teina engaged her colleagues and has found a role she is so passionate about. It was inspiring seeing a woman add so much value to the organisation.”

Advice for other students
Tanique’s advice for other students is simple: make the most of your time at AG飞禽走兽电子.

“My advice is to get involved in extracurricular activities and step out of your comfort zone to meet new people and do something you wouldn’t usually do.”

Taking part in these extracurricular activities can also be useful for your future career, she adds.

“Through the activities I took part in, I gained the confidence to meet people and have conversations with a diverse bunch of people. This has helped me in my current job where meeting people is the essence of what I do daily. Being in recruitment also requires time management and organisational skills, which I developed through my studies and the extracurricular activities I participated in.”
